COST: £25 per person scheduled walks
Length 14.2km
Total Ascent 551m
The first 40 minutes of this walk is steep and through forestry of spruce and larch, finally opening out onto moorland to give beautiful views over the hills towards Cilycwm.
The uplands are full of birds and in Spring the larks are plentiful.
Country lanes and fields wind toward the spectacular Cynghordy viaduct and when it appears you realise why it left one local farmer speechless for a week when it was first built.
The route allows you to observe it from the hills above, and once you’ve descended and crossed the Heart of Wales Railway Line you can wander underneath it’s 16 magnificent arches.
Tucked beneath these is the beautiful Gosen Chapel with its arched windows, doors and gates. No longer an active chapel, it still opens occasionally for recitals. Heading back up hill is hard work, but more lovely views await and once you reach the river Towy on the way back to Rhandirmwyn, you can cool your feet in the river before returning to The Royal Oak pub for a refreshing and well-earned beverage (if it’s open – times vary).
