Length: 15km

Ascent: 781m

Cost: £30

This long, all-day walk is truly spectacular but not for the faint-hearted (or tight-chested..). The ascent is nearly 800m to the ‘Carmarthen Fans’, the 3 high peaks of the Black Mountain Range (Fan Foel, Picws Ddu and Fan Brycheiniog), in the less-frequented western area of Bannau Brycheiniog.

This quieter route ascends via the Beacons Way (rather than the main path) which arrives at the first viewpoint overlooking the atmospheric Llyn Y Fan Fach. It then heads to the ridge of the peaks with 360 views of the National Park. Eventually the route descends a steep, stepped path to the beautiful second lake, Llyn Y Fan Fawr, before heading back over the moorland, away from the main footpaths to the car park. If there’s time we’ll take a look at the source of the river Usk, rising from the hillside.

Due to the nature of the terrain this walk will only go ahead in dry, clear conditions, so cancellation is possible.
